Musings of a Cynical Optimist

for everyone

We are enjoying another weekend of touring around with a guest, as my Sweetie's mom is here visiting. We've had great weather with mostly sunshine and cool breezes. We drove down to a park in Kihei to relax by the ocean. We drove to McGregor Point for some whale-watching.

Sweetie's mom and I were tipped off by a friend of hers about a very inexpensive massage alternative here on the island. Little did I know. The Maui School of Therapeutic Massage is located upcountry in Makawao. They have a full-time and part-time massage school. Well, I guess all those students need to practice their new techniques on real people. So, how do they do that? Cheap massages! Woo hoo! If you are willing to take a massage from a masseuse or masseur -in-training, you can get a one-hour massage for $30. What a deal! I don't think you can beat that price anywhere on the island.

The caveat, of course, is that you are being worked on by a student. Also, you could be worked on by two people at some point, as the instructors walk through during the sessions and point out different techniques to the students. They give the massages in one big room with areas partitioned off by curtains. So, you have your own private space, but they don't have separate rooms, like the snazzy spas. But both of us were very happy with our massages. The student did a perfectly fine job, and hey! it was an hour-long massage for $30. If you want the ultimate pampered experience, you should probably go to a regular spa or full-time massage therapist. But if you just want someone to work out some of those mainland-issued kinks and knots, you might want to give them a try.
